SLO 2

Portfolio of Work

Students will demonstrate understandings of the historical and present structures of education and the significance of schools as a cultural institution within a larger system of power.

Overview

In America, education has a vast history which is still a big influence of today's education. Understanding the history of education and the development of educational theories is integral to being an effective teacher. This history exemplifies what practices do and do not work in a classroom as well as the inequities that certain races and cultures have endured. These inequities and how they were handled in legal pretenses show how educational practices in learning and funding can be heavily influenced  by the government.

Artifact 1

Brown v. Board of Education and Inequality

With this artifact I learned about Brown v. Board of Education and how African Americans have been historically oppressed in the classroom. The historical segregation and inequality can still be seen in schools today and many times these issues have been taken to court and rallied against. In writing this piece I was able to learn about the struggles that minorities still face today and how these issues are entangled in the legal system.

Artifact 2

Public School, Private School and Socioeconomic Status

In this artifact I looked into the connection between public and private schools and the socioeconomic status of their students. I found that most if not all students who attend private school are from affluent families which provides an additional benefit to these students. Alternatively, students in low SES families often go to public school that is not able to provide a fraction of opportunities that a private school can. Through the research that went into this paper, I was able to find evidence that shows students with high SES are automatically ahead and have a major advantage when compared to low SES students. Students are put in an unfair position in their education due to the wealth of their family. This document shows how education is tied to bigger issues in society and how real these issues are for our students.
