SLO 3

Portfolio of Work

Students will demonstrate understandings of the developmental stages of children and adolescents, of a variety of models of cognition, and of how each of these can be connected to effective teaching and learning.

Overview

In one classroom, every student could be in a slightly different developmental stage. Being able to understand the stage that your students are in is vital to effective teaching and learning. Without an understanding of these stages, lessons may be too hard or too easy for students which will inhibit their ability to effectively learn. Students must be provided work that is just challenging enough for them to learn but not feel overwhelmed. Knowing the different developmental stages can help teachers plan appropriate lessons for their students and set up the scaffolding needed. Without appropriate work for specific developmental stages, students will not be able to effectively learn and teachers will not be able to effectively teach these students.

Artifact 1

Educational Psychology Final Paper

In this artifact, I was able to discuss several topics and theories that discuss developmental stages of children and useful education approaches for those stages. In writing this paper, I was able to learn more about what is effective in teaching students with different needs at different stages. This allowed me to consider what actions I might want to take in my own classroom and how to effectively execute those techniques to benefit my students.

Artifact 2

Self Esteem Lesson Plan

In this artifact, I created a self esteem lesson plan with a partner. In this assignment, we created all materials that would be used in the lesson. Additionally, I discuss how students with different learning needs would be accommodated and what would be done for them. We also had to include the state mandated learning objectives that were covered in this lesson and how we covered them. In creating this lesson plan I had to take into consideration the cognitive stages of the students and ensure we were creating material that was appropriate for their level. As understanding students' cognitive levels are crucial, this artifact allowed me to put my knowledge to practical use and gain experience in lesson planning.
